Just looking for a snoring mouthpiece? The snoring problems you are trying to solve may be a sign of life threatening sleep apnea.
With an estimated 18 million people with undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in America alone, there is a good chance that you or a loved one may be one of them. Getting treated now could add up to 15 years to your life and could significantly improve your quality of life.
Oral appliances, also known as mandibular advancement devices, are the alternative to CPAP many patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea have been looking for. The oral appliance is considered, by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, to be an appropriate first-line therapy for mild to moderate OSA and an appropriate second-line therapy for patients with severe OSA if they cannot tolerate CPAP. Other severe apneics, able to tolerate CPAP, can feel the difference in their energy and alertness with CPAP and oral appliance combination therapy.
There are various boil and bite snoring mouthpieces available over-the-counter, through the internet or via infomercials on TV. Using one of these quick and easy snoring solutions without getting a qualified dentist involved can be risky, potentially leading to serious health consequences.
Custom oral appliances are FDA approved and available for the treatment of sleep apnea only through a qualified dentist. A non-custom appliance (snoring appliance) could stop the snoring without adequately treating sleep apnea, and the low oxygen levels that can lead to health problems like heart disease and strokes. Other potential side effects of wearing a non-custom oral appliance such as TMJ disorders, bruxism and shifting of the tooth position, are more likely to occur compared to treatment guided by an experienced dentist providing a custom oral appliance.
Custom appliances are also shown to be more comfortable and effective than a snoring mouth guard.

There are numerous dental devices for snoring and sleep apnea available to specially trained dentists to treat sleep disordered breathing. Depending on examination findings including the size and shape of the patient’s mouth and tongue, the dental health situation and any signs of TMJ disorder or bruxism, your dentist will weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each type of oral appliance type and recommend the right appliance. See a list of oral appliances and descriptions.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a medical disease so reimbursement falls under your Medical Health insurance plan, not a dental insurance plan. Insurance does not cover pre-fabricated snoring mouthpieces.
Whether your insurance policy covers your oral appliance depends on your insurance policy, as well as your medical history and sleep study results, based on documentation provided to the insurance company by your dentist. Choosing a dental office with training and experience in dental sleep medicine, documenting medical necessity and billing medical insurance for oral appliance therapy, increases your chances of insurance reimbursement and can also increase the amount of coverage.
Since few dentists are in-network providers for oral appliance therapy, experienced dental practices may be able to increase the percentage of coverage through a gap exception.
Snoring Isn’t Sexy dentists have access to the best training, education and help on billing insurance for sleep apnea treatment. The parent company of Snoring Isn’t Sexy, Nierman Practice Management, has been training dental practices on medical insurance reimbursement for TMJ disorders, oral appliance therapy and other medically necessary treatments for over 25 years and has helped more dental practices obtain medical insurance reimbursement than any other company.
If your appliance is properly fitted and adjusted, you should see an improvement in your energy levels, your relationships and overall quality of life! A qualified dentist will follow a treatment plan and certain protocols, such as follow up sleep studies and examinations to ensure your appliance is properly fitted and adjusted to get the maximum benefit from your appliance, while minimizing any potential side effects.
Snoring Isn’t Sexy™ dentists continually hear how oral appliance therapy has helped their patient’s lives and relationships.

When I was diagnosed with severe Sleep Apnea and I was told I had to wear a CPAP machine for the rest of my life, everytime I went to sleep I was very upset and scared. I started using the CPAP but felt uncomfortable all night. Then I found Dr. Stern on the internet and decided to see him. He introduced me to this really cool oral appliance that is practically transparent. I was not sure if it would work however decided to go for it.(I finally returned my CPAP machine). I have to tell you it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I sleep much better and wake up fresh every day. I can toss and turn and walk around with it if I need to. It fits perfectly over my teeth and is very easy to remove. I am thankful to Dr. Stern and his team for changing my life. I will recommend using the oral appliance to anyone who has Sleep Apnea. It will change your life forever!. Thank you Dr. Stern you are the BEST!
"Dr. Stern and his team have delivered! My wife and I thank you so much . My Oral Sleep appliance is a Miracle"
Many thanks to Dr. Stern and the oral appliance he prescribed me. With his help I am sleeping much better and have more energy. My wife also sleeps better knowing I no longer snore. I have my life back !!
Wow! What a difference the Silencer appliance has made in my life. I sleep better. I wake up less tired and best of all my wife loves it.
You saved my marriage!
I was afraid I would choke during my sleep. I would wake up exhausted. I used to pull over to the side of the road to rest ,so as not to fall asleep at the wheel of my car. I was scared to drive because of my sleep apnea. Let alone sleeping in another room bcause of the loud snoring that prevented my wife from having a good night's sleep. Not anymore ,thanks to Dr. Stern and my oral appliance. Now I wake up more refreshed without feeling like I am choking in my sleep. I am way less tired during the day and don't need to take my power naps anymore. Best of all I'm back in the same bed with my wife!
I tried everything and nothing worked. I'm happy my doctor recomended oral appliance treatment. My husband says I don't snore, and I wake up more refreshed inthe morning. Thanks so very much!
